First time I'm listing to this podcast. I heard about this through the 1up podcast. On the subject of "graduating" from gaming:
I'm sorry, but I agree with Fumito Ueda. Games is the only "art" form that I get bored of. I've notice as I get older my interest in games go down. I don't want it to be that way, but I almost have to force myself to play a game now-a-days.
I have the time and money to play games. Also, I play numerous genre of games, yet still get bored. It's more common then you think. This is why I think games can never be art. I never get bored of literature, films, music, painting etc.
EDIT: I meant I don't agree with Fumito Ueda
@Franz Yeah, I know what you mean. As I mentioned, I have had times where I found it difficult to get in a game and not just a single game, but just gaming in general for large periods of time. I think that when there are broader types of games as opposed to "Shoot this" then there will be more of a "Games for every mood" feel. Personally, I get that with movies. I don't always feel like an action movie, but I don't watch exclusively dramas.
Also, thanks for checking us out from 1UP! We really appreciate it!
Wow, thanks for the reply. This website is pretty cool. Back to the subject:
I'm only 22 and I gamed my entire life, but picking up a controller and actually sitting down and playing is daunting to me now. I've come up with the conclusion that my 360 is the last system I will ever buy. I never use it. People talk about how their Wii is collecting dust, well, I can say the same about my 360. Gaming has past me. I love to hear about it, but not play it. It's interesting that this happens a lot to gamers. I never get bored of music. A song, yes, but music, no. I get bored with gaming in general.
@Franz Thanks a lot man! Glad you like the site!
I completely agree with you. I got my 360 last summer and I never NEVER use it. I actually used to have a Wii but now I regret selling it. I think I'll get one by the end of the year. Personally, I'm a little underwhelmed with the 360 but it still doesn't deter me from playing. Interesting to hear your thoughts though! I have friends who are very similar to you and your experience.
My last comment (I have to go back to class lol):
My brother – who introduced me to gaming- hasn't touch a gaming system since the ps2. My brother was the kid who beat the original Legend of Zelda without a battery save. He subscribed to Nintendo Power, and waited on line to see The Wizard. Now, it's alien to him. He saw me playing Modern Warfare 2 and thought it was cool, but had no desire to touch the controller.
I also have a PS3 and I only use that for blu-ray (the only game I have is Flower) I do have to admit that many of the games that peak my interest are on the Wii. Games like: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Mario Galaxy 2, Muramasa and the new Donkey Kong game look cool.
I'll be sure to subscribe, bye
Yeah, my older brothers were the ones who introduced me to gaming and now they don't really play at all. Same deal: they think it looks cool but don't ever feel like playing.
As for the Wii, I think that Nintendo is still doing some really innovative things on their platform and that is why we're finding some of the games there so attractive. I use my PS3 most of all, but some of the games I am most excited about now are coming out on the Wii. We have some previews up already and more to come!
Thanks for subscribing to the podcast. If you're inspired you should go through our backlog, there are some great episodes (including one with Christian Nutt from Gamasutra).
Correction: Limbo will be the game that takes the dust away from my 360. I'll be sure to check out some of your past episodes.
Haha we actually talk about it in a couple of our earlier episodes!
Also, we discuss this idea of moving away from games a lot, but I think what we forget is that a lot of people, as they get older, move away from music, film and other art forms that they were passionate about in their younger years as well. Music was always a huge part of my life, something that I never intended to distance myself from, but it happens.
@Franz, I don't think that moving away from games is a bad thing, necessarily. The fact that you're here sharing your experiences I think shows that they are still something that you see as interesting and significant. For me personally, though I have very little time to play games, I definitely find the time to read about and educate myself about the medium, because I think that it's inherently interesting. Maybe our daily "role" and interaction with games changes over time. . . Of course, there's always individual difference as well!
Thanks for sharing!
