Talk Is Cheap – 01/04/10

It's just Nick, Cody, Ian, and Matthew this week. They talk about everything in the decade, including Kojima, Dead Space 2, Darksiders, Dante's Inferno, Assassin's Creed 2, and whole lists of other stuff.

If you have any questions or topics you want us to talk about on the podcast, send them to us at podcast@levelfortytwo.com. Note: Since we did things a bit differently this week, the audio quality is lower than usual. Sorry!

Hey matt congrats on the podcasts. I've been listening for 15 minutes right now and its a pretty interesting conversation. Many of the classic games you guys have been talking about make me realize that i really don't know much about the classic games. I thought i'd maybe throw out a couple of pretty iconic games for me. Tie Fighter, duke nukem 3d, cyberia are three games that i've totally forgotten about that i've invested many many fun hours playing. Under a killing moon was able to mix great point and click investigation type gameplay with fmvs. There are only a few games that have come out recently that have been able to grasp my full attention wihle playing without putting down the controller. Mario 64 was probably one of the biggest revolutions in gaming for me. The freedom and feeling that i got while running around the courtyard in full 3d still to this day catches my attention. it was able to keep the controls simple while allowing the gamer to do some pretty impressive things. Thats one thing that has turned me off fighting games these days. True the whole fighting systems have been beefed up with more moves and abilities to allow for more complexity but i find myself frustated at having to learn all the different stances for each character in order to effectively use the character. Street fighter 2, dead or alive, both only until recently didn't use the stance system and i found those the most fun. Current gen systems have the ability to display HD visuals, more realistic and bigger terrains but the developers have to keep in mind that although they can implement complicated controls to allow a character to do more, if they do not do it in an appropriate manner, these controls can turn some players off. That's one reason why I can't play new rts games. Now you have hero characters (which are fine) but these require support characters and good micro managing skills to effectively use them. I dunno maybe i need to play more of these games and learn how to use all the new elements before I can be critical about the game.
Keep up the good work matt
See you next time i'm in T.O
